2009 Annual Meeting
The VML Insurance Programs 2009 Annual Meeting took place on Friday, May 15th
,
2009 at The Place at Innsbrook in Richmond, Virginia. This year's meeting was a
huge success, attendance was high and the topics chosen by our speakers were
invaluable. Aside from attendees receiving very useful information on a wide variety of topics, several of our
members were recognized for their outstanding performance throughout the year.
Richard J. Garza, Hazardous Materials/Safety Officer for the City of Manassas,
shared the city's safety incentive program and how they recognize their
employees' contributions to creating a safe work environment. Dan Sulzner, of Midwest Casualty,
taught our members how to use data to focus their loss prevention effectively,
how to identify trends and patterns and how to use data information to develop
successful loss prevention programs.
David Zuby, Senior VP of Vehicle Research with the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety discussed new vehicle designs and the potential for new crash
avoidance technologies. Last but not
least, Commissioner Roger Williams of the Virginia Workers' Compensation
Commission informed members of what to expect in the future as well as the
changes that the commission made in the last year. He also discussed the Electronic Data
Exchange project.
As in previous years, one of the major highlights of the meeting was the awards
presentations. This year's winners
include some new names and faces as well as others that have been recognized
previously.
The 2009 Risk Management Performance Awards went to the Town of Edinburg (VMLP),
the Town of Alta Vista (VMLP), the Town of Culpepper (VMLP), the Town of Dayton
(VMGSIA), the City of Petersburg (VMGSIA) and Tidewater Regional Group Home
Commission (VMGSIA).
The individual Risk Management Excellence Awards went to James Covel (Upper
Occoquan Service Authority), Steve LePock (Virginia Beach Schools), Chief Jeff
Faries (City of Colonial Heights), Steve Corbit (City of Winchester), Barbara
Kunkel (Norfolk Airport Authority), Bob Phillips (City of Martinsville), Annette
Hall (Stafford County Schools), Lina Kennedy (City of Suffolk), Sheryl Adams
(Greater Richmond Transit Company), Neil Norris (Western Virginia Water
Authority), Angela Clem (Town of Woodstock) and Debbie Desjardins (City of
Lexington).
Finally, Manassas Park City Schools was the recipient of the 2009 Margaret A.
Nichols Risk Management Leadership Award. Manassas Park City Schools has been a member of VMGSIA since 1982 and
VMLP since 2001. Through the utilization of a practical approach to safety and risk management they have
maintained a favorable loss ratio despite substantial exposures.
