School bus systems need emergency plans

School transportation providers must have plans in place governing their actions in the event of natural disasters, acts of terrorism or civil unrest.   In these unpredictable situations, serious hazards can arise along the route.   What's more, school buses might be called upon to transport an entire student body in an evacuation.

The National Safety Council recommends that school bus fleet administrators follow these recommendations when planning for emergencies.

•  Coordinate efforts with those of local emergency management and response agencies, including fire, emergency medical services, law enforcement, local emergency planning committees and others as needed.

•  Develop plans to provide for the needs of mentally and physically challenged students in an emergency.

•  Establish procedures for handling emergencies such as collisions, riots, strikes, sabotage, natural disasters and school evacuations.

•  Establish alternate methods of communications in the event that phone service is disrupted, such as radios or cell phones.

•  Evaluate the likelihood that various emergencies might occur and establish communication with all agencies that would respond so such events.

•  Inform all stakeholders, including parents, students, school and transportation department employers, about your plans and procedures.

•  Periodically review and practice your emergency plans.
